For decades we have been blessed to serve our community.

Who We Are

In 1952, a seminary student who was working for the summer at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, VA and was looking for a way to share God’s love with the neighborhood around the church. He began a club. This club took its name and direction from I Timothy 4:12 which reads, “Don’t let anyone think little of you because you are young. Be their ideal; let them follow the way you teach and live; be a pattern for them in your love, your faith, and your clean thoughts.” The 8 club members and their leader, Irving Stubbs, met weekly during that summer for bible study and recreation.

As the College Hill community changed the financial program resources of Westminster Presbyterian Church were exhausted. The Presbytery, now Presbytery of the Peaks (formerly Blue Ridge Presbytery), seeing a great opportunity for missionary outreach in the inner-city of Lynchburg, began contributing financial assistance. Help came from other Lynchburg Presbyterian Churches, and from many urban Churches in the downtown Lynchburg area.

In 1979, through the Timothy Committee, Churches for Urban Ministry (CUM), was organized to meet the ever increasing needs of the inner-city of Lynchburg. Churches for Urban Ministry consisted of 8 churches, 2 agencies, and a host of concerned individuals that commit themselves with volunteer hours and financial resources to meet the needs of individuals living in the inner-city.
